About Earwigs
Earwigs are easily recognizable by their dark brown, slender bodies, typically ranging from ¼ to 1 inch in length. They feature long antennae, about half the length of their bodies, and are equipped with two pairs of wings, although they seldom fly. The most distinctive aspect of earwigs is their forceps-like cerci extending from their abdomens, giving them a formidable appearance.
Life Cycle and Habits
Female earwigs create underground chambers for their eggs, which they meticulously maintain by frequently moistening them. Post-hatching, the chambers are sealed to protect the nymphs until their first molting phase. Earwigs are nocturnal, congregating in damp outdoor areas like mulch, woodpiles, and near house foundations.
Indoor Presence
Earwigs venture indoors due to weather changes or food scarcity, entering through cracks and openings. Inside, they are typically found in moist environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms, often hiding in potted plants, under rugs, or amongst newspapers.
Diet
Omnivores by nature, earwigs feed on both decaying and fresh vegetation, as well as living and deceased insects. When inside homes, they may consume stored food products, including cookies, flour, and bread.
Indicators of an Infestation
The presence of earwigs inside is the primary sign of an infestation, as they neither bite, cause structural damage, nor produce noise. Encountering one or two earwigs doesn’t necessarily indicate a significant problem indoors, but could suggest a larger population outside.
Misconceptions and Reality
Despite myths suggesting earwigs burrow into brains via the ear, they pose no danger to humans. However, they can be detrimental to gardens and indoor plants.
