The Most Common Pests in Utah Homes and How to Prevent Them

Bugs and rodents love a warm, inviting Utah home just as much as you do. From the kitchen to the attic, homeowners across Northern Utah deal with a fair share of unwanted visitors throughout the year. While some are just annoying, others could cause serious damage or health issues if they’re not dealt with quickly.

At Greenline Pest Solutions, we’ve been protecting homes like yours since 2009. We know exactly which pests are common in your area—and more importantly, how to keep them out. Let’s take a closer look at the pests we see most often in Utah homes and what you can do to stop them in their tracks.

1. Ants

Common Types in Utah:

  • Pavement ants
  • Carpenter ants

Ants are one of the most common pest problems in Utah homes, especially in warmer months. Pavement ants often sneak into kitchens and pantries in search of food, while carpenter ants can be more serious—they tunnel through wood and may weaken structural elements over time.

What Attracts Them:

  • Crumbs and food residue
  • Pet food left out
  • Moisture around sinks or leaky pipes

Prevention Tips:

  • Wipe down counters and sweep floors regularly
  • Store food in sealed containers
  • Fix leaks and eliminate standing water
  • Seal gaps and cracks around windows, doors, and foundations

Even a few ants can signal a larger colony nearby. If they keep coming back no matter what you try, it’s time for a professional inspection to find and treat the source.

Common Types in Utah:

  • Carpenter ants

Ants are one of the most common pest problems in Utah homes, especially when it starts warming up. Pavement ants are one thing—they’re mostly after crumbs and leftovers. But carpenter ants? They’ll dig into wood and can quietly cause serious damage to your home.

  • Crumbs and food residue
  • Pet food left out
  • Moisture around sinks or leaky pipes

Prevention Tips:

  • Wipe down counters and sweep floors regularly
  • Store food in sealed containers

2. Spiders

Common Types in Utah:

  • Black widow spiders
  • Hobo spiders
  • Common house spiders

Most spiders in Utah are harmless, but that doesn’t mean you want them relaxing in your living room. Many are harmless and just a bit creepy to find around the house. But others, like black widows and hobo spiders, come with the risk of a painful—and potentially serious—bite.

Where Spiders Hide:

  • Dark, quiet areas like basements, garages, and closets
  • Behind furniture or in cluttered spaces
  • Near windows and vents

Prevention Tips:

  • Keep storage areas clean and organized
  • Use sealed bins instead of cardboard boxes
  • Install or repair screens on windows and vents
  • Vacuum regularly, especially around baseboards and ceilings

Seeing a spider or two isn’t unusual, but frequent sightings may mean it’s time to clear out hiding spots or call in an expert to inspect for nests or egg sacs.

3. Mice & Rodents

Rodents are nothing if not sneaky. They can squeeze through gaps the size of a dime and make themselves at home behind walls, in attics, or under appliances. They’re not just looking for shelter; they’re also on the hunt for food and nesting materials, which leads to chewed wires, torn insulation, and contaminated surfaces. The damage can add up fast, especially since mice and rats reproduce quickly and are great at staying out of sight.

Common Signs of Rodents in the Home:

  • Droppings along baseboards or in cabinets
  • Gnaw marks on food packaging or wires
  • Scratching or scampering sounds, especially at night
  • Nests made of shredded paper or fabric

Prevention Tips:

  • Seal cracks and holes around the foundation, vents, and pipes
  • Store all food (including pet food) in airtight containers
  • Keep outdoor trash bins tightly sealed and away from the house
  • Trim vegetation and keep firewood stacked away from the home’s exterior

4. Wasps & Hornets

Stinging insects like wasps and hornets tend to show up at the most inconvenient times.  They can quickly become a problem if they build nests near doorways, patios, or play areas. Some species are more aggressive than others, and an unexpected sting can turn dangerous if someone in your household is allergic.

Where They Nest:

  • Under roof eaves and decks
  • Inside outdoor furniture or grills
  • In trees, bushes, or wall cavities

Prevention Tips:

  • Regularly inspect the exterior of your home for early-stage nests
  • Avoid leaving food or sugary drinks outside, especially during warmer months
  • Keep garbage cans closed and clean
  • Seal any small openings around your roofline or attic vents

5. Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are a common sight in Utah, especially during late summer and fall. They tend to show up in large numbers—and once they’re inside, they’re tough to get rid of. They’re attracted to warmth and sunlight, often clustering on windows, siding, and doors before finding a way indoors.

When They Appear:

  • Late summer through fall
  • Warm, sunny days near the end of the season

Prevention Tips:

  • Seal gaps around doors, windows, and siding
  • Install screens or replace damaged one
  • Use weather stripping to block entry points
  • Vacuum bugs instead of crushing them—they can stain surfaces and release a foul odor

These pests don’t stick around all year, but once they’ve found a cozy corner inside, they’ll be back every season unless their entry points are sealed up.

6. Earwigs, Silverfish, & Other Occasional Invaders

Some pests don’t live in your home year-round, but if the conditions are right, they’ll wander right in. Earwigs, silverfish, pill bugs, and other seasonal invaders are drawn to moisture and dark spaces. While they’re not actively harmful, you don’t want them around, especially when they start showing up in your bathroom or kitchen.

Common Habitats:

  • Damp areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms
  • Cardboard boxes in storage areas
  • Cracks in foundation or around baseboards

Prevention Tips:

  • Use a dehumidifier in damp rooms
  • Fix leaky pipes or faucets
  • Store items in sealed plastic bins instead of cardboard
Seal gaps along baseboards, windows, and entryways

A sudden spike in sightings usually means there’s a moisture issue nearby—fixing that is key to keeping these creepy crawlers out.
